Square Meal review of All Star Lanes: ? Write your review

The second branch of the cool bowling joint that combines retro-chic American dining with 10-pin bowling is larger than its Bloomsbury sibling but, like the original, it has proved such a hit that advance booking is necessary. The best tables are the six-seater booths overlooking the lanes, but a private room can be booked by larger groups so you can eat, drink & bowl in your own tucked-away space. Some dodgy crab claws aside, the cooking is decent. Best of all are the baby back ribs – so tender the meat literally falls off the bone at the slightest prod, though an accurately cooked steak comes a close second. The drinks list tempts with quirky beers, whisky-based cocktails & surprisingly impressive wines, but those who are serious about their bowling should probably stick to root beer.

I was very impressed by All Star Lanes on my first visit, and have since been back a few times and not been disappointed. The space itself is nicely laid out, with a bar just to the left of reception as you come in (decked out like some kind of 70s lumberjack joint), then the diner space between it and the lanes at the back. The menu ticks all of the typical diner-style boxes, and the food is surpisingly good – both the healthy (caesar salad) and not so healthy (burgers, fries) options. They also have a “blue plate special” each day and a range of interesting US beers, which adds to the authenticity of the experience, all served by pleasant (and patient) waiting staff.

Of course, most of the fun is generated by the lanes themselves – the atmosphere from there certainly spills over into the dining area. Bowling is a great group activity (frankly, everyone tends to be as bad as each other), and its a great way to round off a night before finishing with a few drinks in the bar, where the cocktails are also good.

Overall, highly recommended – just rememeber to book your lanes in advance. I'm eagerly awaiting the opening of the Brick Lane branch!
