Square Meal Review of All Star Lanes ?

The All Star franchise (there are now four sites across London) has brought a tasteful slice of 50s’ Americana to the 10-pin scene. Even if you’re not bowling, the high-value cocktails & down-home food are reason enough to visit this basement venue below Whiteleys shopping centre. The restaurant, which looks like a modern reworking of a classic American diner, serves up calorie-laden comfort food, including glazed baby back ribs, award-winning chilli, & macaroni with three cheeses. At weekends, the brunch menu (noon-5pm) runs the gamut from eggs & pancakes to smoked salmon. Best of all is a dazzling array of cocktails ranging from classic Manhattans to gorgeously fruity All Star juleps, expertly mixed in the supremely sexy bar with its low lighting & circular, red-leather booths.

Good venue for a night out with a difference. I actually hired the 2 lane room for my 30th a few years ago & it was very good (food, drinks, service). Went back this saturday night with my husband for a quick bite & bowl & was quite impressed with the food in the diner, as it could have been poor in a gimmicky place like this. Quesadillas to start were ok and a salad as a main, which was really nice. Husband had deep fried squid & ribs, which he really enjoyed. Its a good place for a hen night/leaving-do.

I was very impressed by All Star Lanes on my first visit, and have since been back a few times and not been disappointed. The space itself is nicely laid out, with a bar just to the left of reception as you come in (decked out like some kind of 70s lumberjack joint), then the diner space between it and the lanes at the back. The menu ticks all of the typical diner-style boxes, and the food is surpisingly good – both the healthy (caesar salad) and not so healthy (burgers, fries) options. They also have a “blue plate special” each day and a range of interesting US beers, which adds to the authenticity of the experience, all served by pleasant (and patient) waiting staff.

Of course, most of the fun is generated by the lanes themselves – the atmosphere from there certainly spills over into the dining area. Bowling is a great group activity (frankly, everyone tends to be as bad as each other), and its a great way to round off a night before finishing with a few drinks in the bar, where the cocktails are also good.

Overall, highly recommended – just rememeber to book your lanes in advance. I'm eagerly awaiting the opening of the Brick Lane branch!
