Square Meal review of Vanilla: ? Write your review

Vanilla is a stylish members’ bar & restaurant pitched at Fitzrovia’s media & fashion-conscious crowd. The basement bar is a dazzling, all-white apparition of curtained booths & tinkling chandeliers – like some groovy vision of the afterlife. The so-hip-it-hurts theme continues in the restaurant, a long windowless box with frosted-glass roof panels & a strident black pattern on the walls. Everything suggests style over substance, until the food arrives. Seared scallops on creamy cauliflower puree with lardons is slickly presented & well flavoured. Sea bass with artichoke hearts, edamame, & vanilla & Amaretto sauce is more modish, the fish perfectly cooked & the sauce subtle. Even a zany-sounding chocolate & jasmine fondant with olive oil ice-cream is rather good. Like the food, the wine list is reasonably priced (though there’s a limited selection by the glass), while grown-up cocktails use ingredients such as fresh raspberries, chilli & ginger to zingy effect.

I totally agree with Flying Food, Vanilla was such a charming place and I had excellent service. I would also recommend the tasting menu, its playfully presented. There is a trendy bar attached too if you fancy pre-dinner cocktails.

I ate in Vanilla this week for this first time in a year or so and thought it was exceptional. Their tasting menu concept was great with a succession of very creative, well balanced dishes leaving my dinner guest and I wowed by the end of the meal. I really think this is Michelin quality food and I definitely enjoyed it more than recent trips to the Fat Duck and Murano. Each dish was highly unusual, such as the potatoes in clay, yet it all tasted great, with nothing you would dislike and all very well presented. The service was friendly and efficent and the ultra-modern design is excellent too. I think it's a hidden gem which would appeal to foodies and regular punters alike.
