Square Meal review of Kiasu:
Queensway has become a haven of good-quality Chinese dining, so it’s pleasing to find a newcomer offering something different. Kiasu focuses on the cuisine of Malaysia & Singapore – which blends Chinese, Malay, Indian, Indonesian & Thai flavours – serving it up in a no-frills interior with unforgiving lighting & utilitarian seating. Starters are impressive, including full-flavoured otak otak (fishcakes roasted in banana leaf) & tahu goreng (a salad of deep-fried tofu, cucumber & beansprouts with a rich peanut sauce). Mains, however, were a let-down. Thai red duck curry was tasty but featured far more fat than meat, coconutty Nyonya chicken curry was full of gristly cuts of poultry, char kway teow (fried rice noodle) was greasy, while laksa (Malaysian noodle soup) was unpleasantly fishy. Staff are sweet & prices reasonable, but things need to be ironed out in the kitchen before Kiasu lures diners away from its Chinese competitors.
