Square Meal review of Benugo Bar & Kitchen:
This glossy branch of upmarket sandwich chain Benugo in the revamped BFI Southbank (formerly the National Film Theatre) wouldn’t look out of place in the more fashionable precincts of Manhattan. But though the addition of Bar & Kitchen to its moniker signals serious intent, the repackaging is tarnished by lacklustre cooking. The light & lively bar does serve excellent cocktails – the Champagne Mojito alone is worth the visit – but a lone drink is how you might prefer the experience: smoked salmon with chips & aioli involved fish draped clumsily over a stack of thick-cut chips & a cloying garlic mayo. Overpoweringly citrussy lemon & fennel risotto cakes were tepid, while smoked trout fishcakes, though hot, were potato heavy & bland. On the brighter side, the service is breezy & pleasant, so if you opt for a simple sandwich, salad or just a drink, you shouldn’t leave disappointed.
