The Cumberland Hotel’s entry into the late-night style bar market fancies itself as a Carbon copy of Shoreditch in the West End. But it takes more than industrial styling, designer warehouse chic & thumping dance beats to create E1 authenticity. Let’s be blunt: Carbon is an Oxford Street bar that will attract West End office girls, shoppers & rookie footballers. Identity crisis aside, it’s a timely arrival in dreary Marble Arch. On the drinks front, there are good cocktails from £7.50, an impressive spirit range that includes premium brands – with several in the £200 & £800 per bottle bracket – most wines well over £20, Krug, Cristal (housed in a splendid double-height ‘Champagne wall’) & Taittinger, the entry-level fizz at £50. Try pushing that in Brick Lane!
