Square Meal Review of The Draft House ?

There are several dining establishments hereabouts, but beer drinkers head for this comfortable corner pub – one of a trio of Draft Houses – where the choice is enormous: 15 beers & ciders on tap, including local Sambrook’s Wandle. What’s more, you can order third of a pint measures, allowing ample opportunity to compare brews. You’ll also find some 50 bottled beers from around the world to try. Knowing its clientele, the pub’s British menu (fish & chips, steaks, homemade pork scratchings) recommends a beer to go with each dish. Those who prefer the grape needn’t despair – there’s a serviceable wine list offering selections by the glass & carafe. The ‘fab’ private rooms could make a fine venue for a party; tours around Sambrook’s brewery can be arranged too.

Expecting a traditional pub I was surprised to find it spacious and inviting; the large windows lighting up the pub draw an emphasis to the bar, which is the centre piece of this welcoming pub. The bar was arrayed with various beers on tap, dripping with the cold perspiration which speaks volumes to educated drinker on a hot summer’s day. The atmosphere was relaxed; soft blues music filtering through the speakers, accompanied by the general hum of conversation from various drinkers and groups of people seated at tables outside having a meal. Clean and pristine, the seating areas are upholstered in comfortable brown leather and the theatre style kitchen is also an excellent addition with the chefs “on display”.

I was immediately acknowledged at the door and seated in a comfy booth. From the endless beers available I decided on the Oyster Stout listed on the Daily Guest Menu, and recommended by the barman. The food menu consists of British Cuisine with fresh, local ingredients. Specials boards are dotted around the pub. It was a tough choice between the Pork and Veal Meatballs and the Chilli Burger, but I finally decided on the latter. My food arrived in good time, well-presented, a good sized portion with fat chips and salad on the side. As chilli goes, there was just enough tingle in every bite to keep me wanting more.

Perfect for a lazy afternoon meal or a big night out with friends, The Draft House appears capable of catering to all needs; the beer menu is varied enough to enjoy a single exotic pint or a lengthy afternoon of drinking, the food menu is well priced for the quality they serve and diverse enough to appeal to all customers, and the function rooms have enough space for party’s of up to 80, with a DJ booth, private bar and a dance floor.

Don’t be too surprised to see one popping up in your local area soon… I hear they are looking to add another 5 to their portfolio by the end of next year.
