Aubaine’s bright modern spin on the French bistro/bakery has instant visual charm whether you are reclining on the outdoor terrace or ensconced in the wood-floored, blue-grey dining room. Like its siblings in South Ken & Selfridges, it oozes polished mass appeal & the food is an unchallenging mix of full-blooded French standards with a few international interlopers. Roquefort, endive & walnut salad is jazzed up with poached figs & beetroot, while squid comes crisply battered with a potent aïoli & a sprinkling of punchy spring onion. Mains could range from free-range côte de porc with mushrooms, spinach & apples to lobster spaghetti, & desserts plunder the entire French repertoire from éclairs & macaroons to ice-cream sundaes. Sadly, competent cooking can be let down by ‘careless’ service, although the sight of power-lunching media execs sitting cheek-by-jowl with backpackers & day-tripping families suggests that Aubaine’s please-all approach is paying dividends.
