The dinky, red-velvet Redchurch was how it was before the corporate bean counters latched on & colonised this once-edgy neighbourhood. Hardcore Hoxton hipsters may have moved on, but trend chasers should enjoy it before the Cath Kidston classes turn Bethnal Green Road into another Marylebone High Street – although £9.50 for a bloody Maria suggests that that eventuality is already priced in. White lady, sidecar & martinez are among a range of good-to-find classics, & there are pousse-cafés, liquid alco-desserts & punchbowls to share from £34 (serves 4) up to £180 (de luxe, Champagne-doctored hooch for ten to share). Food revolves around ubiquitous mezze/Indian sharing platters. The Redchurch is still good, but it’s not the vintage DJ bar it once was.
