Celeb chef & pub landlord Gordon Ramsay has got shot of most of his other London gastropubs, but The Narrow is the original & best. ‘GR’ branding is kept to a minimum, allowing the pub to sell itself on its own merits. The stunning river views would be enough in themselves, though board games & quiz nights, a decent wine list & a snappy draught beer selection (Adnams Regatta & Meantime Wheat, say) add to the fun. The kitchen has the gastropub repertoire down pat, but isn’t afraid to mix it up with ‘cheffy’ touches such as pistachios & honey in a watermelon & feta salad or a slightly de trop accompaniment of battered soft-shell crabs & crab sarnies with steamed mussels. Potted salt beef with pickles, battered hake with chips, & towering knickerbocker glory are more straightforward. Service can take a while to warm up.
