Square Meal Review of Hawksmoor Spitalfields ?

Quality remains as high as ever at the original Hawksmoor, and readers continue to praise the ‘fantastic’ steaks, ‘food-porn’ burgers, triple-cooked chips and even the homemade tomato ketchup – as we do too. First-timers may be underwhelmed by the no-frills dining room, with its plain furniture and leather seating, but the lack of pretension adds to the charm of the place and chatty, clued-up staff are a real asset. Prepare for the carnivorous onslaught with, say, a lobster cocktail drenched in Marie-Rose sauce, then get stuck into one of Hawksmoor’s much-lauded beefy cuts – perhaps a whopping porterhouse or a dainty, butter-textured fillet. Calorific puds and wacky ice creams round things off, wines include plenty of beef-friendly reds and the cocktail list is a stunner. Some say that prices have ’gone mad’, but the express menu is a steal and you can BYO wine on Mondays.

  1. I've heard so many people evangelise about Hawksmoor but had never been myself. The other week, after birthday cocktails at Discount Suit Company, that was remedied. Although Monday night might not seem like an obvious night to eat out, the place was busy and bristling with a quiet energy. This may (or may not) have something to with Hawksmoor's Monday Wine Club which allows you to bring along your own bottle of wine and only be charged £5 corkage (it's £25 any other day). It's the perfect excuse to drink up that bottle of red you have gathering dust in a corner (or just to have a slightly cheaper meal, unless you compensate by going big on the steak of course). We had a few decent bottles of red left from Christmas that we hadn't drunk and so decided to take those along...

Blog - THE COW CLUB COUNCIL :: Hawksmoor

There is a reason that Hawksmoor is widely regarded as “the” London steak restaurant...the steak is amazing - for us this is the best steak chain in London. Hawksmoor must reside within 'top quartile'; and justifiably, legitimately, even rightly so. When reflecting upon this assessment, it becomes clear that Hawksmoor is an unusually focussed dining experience; which works very much in its favour for some of the categories on our roster, but cripples it for others...

The Cow Club Council :: Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor must reside within 'top quartile'; and justifiably, legitimately, even rightly so. When reflecting upon this assessment, it becomes clear that Hawksmoor is an unusually focussed dining experience; which works very much in its favour for some of the categories on our roster, but cripples it for others. However, so focussed is this operation on it's core category that its comparative lack of intensity on the other elements becomes highly noticeable; the bread is simple and bland, the tables are basic and unsteady, the cutlery is utilitarian, the desserts seem an uncertain afterthought - although the Sweet Potato (served whole, and piping hot) is a boldly flavoursome offering who's character complements the main steak well...

  4. Hawksmoor is without doubt our go-to steak place and we’ve been keen to try their bar menu for months. Then a couple of weeks ago, we saw that they serve a short-rib French dip sandwich. We needed no more convincing and made a beeline for the bar at their Spitalfields branch...
