Hawksmoor is now spreading its wings across the capital, but that hasn't affected the Spitalfields original one jot. Wooden parquet flooring, brick walls and leather seating may not set pulses racing, but the food certainly does – this is a restaurant that understands the pleasure of eating, be it a starter of unctuous Tamworth belly ribs, a side of umami-rich mac and cheese or a nostalgic hit of cornflake ice cream. However, people are really here for Hawksmoor's ‘sublime' British-bred steak – ‘the best in London', sums up one of a legion of fans. Strapping bone-in prime ribs, 55-day-aged D-rumps and other sought-after cuts are all top-drawer, delivering deliciously charred crusts and mouthfuls of flavour. The wine list has plenty of beef-friendly reds, the enviable cocktail menu puts many of its Shoreditch neighbours to shame, and ‘attentive', professional staff are always keen to help and proffer advice.

London Piggy :: Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar – Meaty, very meaty

Burgaffair :: Hawksmoor
Our next Burgaffair visit was to Hawksmoor behind Spitalfields, which is the original restaurant (they have another two gigs in London). A quick heads up. Make sure when you reserve a table it is downstairs as that is the only place where they serve the bar menu where the burger sits. Hawksmoor really is the place in town to go for steak. It is truly rump and fillet above the rest, so we were expecting a burger which delivered on the patty front for certain. You know they aren’t going to skimp on that… are they? Well, read on…
