The restaurant at The Mayfair hotel rises to the challenge presented by nearby glossy eateries. The handsome interior, with dark granite floors & chairs upholstered in Prada leather, is warmed by rich amber tones & a buzz from the open kitchen, which shows a real commitment to British ingredients. Starters hover around the £10 mark & include citrus-marinated Cornish mackerel with avocado mousse & coriander crisp. Mains are more conventional: rich, smoky grilled fillet of Devon beef with potato puree, sautéed kale & ceps or perfectly roasted fillet of Norfolk lamb with slow-roast shoulder confit & creamy red pepper risotto. Imaginative side orders, such as nicely crunchy pumpkin crumble, are particularly recommended.
