Square Meal review of Ye Grapes:
So seductive is Shepherd Market’s jumble of paved alleyways, higgledy-piggledy buildings & alfresco eating opportunities that you’ll want to linger – & this free house is a good place to stop by for a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord or London Pride. This area was once notorious as a hotbed of prostitution, but this dark-painted late Victorian boozer is a thoroughly respectable affair with a pleasant lived-in feel to it. Bunches of carved grapes, a leitmotif that appears throughout, fight for prominence with period curios & assorted taxidermy. Warm yourself at the fire in winter, or spill out onto the courtyard with the early evening throng. The noise is nowhere near as intolerable these days, but in 1764, influential resident the Earl of Coventry was so disturbed by the May Fair’s drunken rabble, its duck hunts, donkey derbys & bawdy behaviour that he had the whole shebang permanently closed down.
