The 2012 Olympics are some way off, but this classy boozer is doing its own bit to put Stratford on the map. To start, there’s the fetching Victorian interior of panelled walls, low ceilings & comforting open fires. Then there’s the solid wine list (mixing Old & New Worlds) & an interesting range of draught beers including Adnams Explorer, Harvey’s Sussex & Cornish favourite St Austell Tribute. The cooking is also notable – modern British flavours with a few Mediterranean flourishes. Sardines in tomato sauce served on chunky homemade bread are earthy & flavoursome, while, to follow, chicken cooked with morel mushrooms & served with bacon & cabbage is charmingly old-fashioned. Desserts such as gorgeous chocolate cake with poached cherries & vanilla ice-cream provide a fitting end to a noteworthy experience.
