Restaurateurs Mark Fuller & Garry Hollihead have revived this 68-year-old Notting Hill stalwart as a posh fish & chip joint, soberly decorated with white napery, grey walls & black banquettes. The food is good: soft-shell crab in thick, crispy batter gets things off to a comforting start, followed by decent-sized pieces of beer-battered fish, which, to judge by our firm-fleshed & pearly haddock, is cooked by someone who’s a dab hand at deep-frying. The fish, naturally, comes with hand-cut chips, though mean-sized portions make mushy peas, tartare sauce & sweet-flavoured onion rings (fried in beef dripping) essential side orders. Fish & chips isn’t all that’s on offer – you could opt for simply grilled hake with baby spinach for something healthier, nursery food such as fishcakes & fish pie, as well as oysters & lobster, while fabulous puds include a luscious roly poly with lashings of custard. The downside is slow & uninterested service.
