A chippie since 1939, Geales has moved up a gear since relaunching in 2007. Smart tablecloths & monochrome photographs lend the two-floor restaurant a ‘stylish & elegant feel’, while simply prepared fish dishes still lead the menu. Slurp a plate of Maldon rock oysters to start, otherwise go for the homemade fish soup or a retro prawn cocktail. Fish & chips has always reigned here, & diners can choose from crisply battered cod, haddock, pollock or sole with the obligatory chips & mushy peas – although big spenders often splash out on excellent fish pie or the ‘exceptional’ lobster spaghetti. Alcoholic fizz rather than ‘pop’ is the drink of choice, & the list includes plenty of crisp, fish-friendly whites, too. There’s treacle tart with lemon clotted cream for those who still have room.
