Square Meal Review of Mercado Bar & Cantina ?

Head to Stoke Newington’s little corner of Mexico on a Friday night & you’ll find the Latin spirit in full effect – no doubt fuelled by the potent (& cheap) margaritas flowing in the bijou bar area. Next door in the restaurant proper, it’s as if a Tex-Mex cliché has exploded: all kitsch, fruit-covered plastic tablecloths, donkey piñatas & sombreros. The food is fresh, & there’s the odd standout dish such as chicken breast in a rich mole poblano sauce. Nevertheless, prices can seem a little high for what you get, & the menu tends to lose itself in the mainstream of enchiladas, burritos & fajitas. If you’re feeling brave, order the chef’s smokin’ hot chilli con carne – four types of chilli, eight hours of slow cooking & one fiery dining experience.

Noisy, brash, colourful – you wouldn't go here for a romantic meal for two but it's the ideal venue for a birthday dinner with friends. The cocktail prices are very good – they do an excellent Margarita for under a fiver but the food is rather expensive for N16, especially as some of the portions are rather small but they have frequent 2 for 1 promos that make things much better value. Last time I went there I had a delicious Pollo al Pimenton – chicken breast rolls stuffed with mushrooms served in a creamy, smoky paprika sauce with rice and salad. It's not haute cuisine but its much more authentic than some of the mexican joints around and everything is freshly made and very tasty.
