An ideal refuelling stop after a visit to the neighbouring Gardens, or for watchers of summer cricket matches on the Green, this huge bar-brasserie is comfortable, unpretentious & good looking. Helpful, cheerful staff set a gentle tone for what otherwise could become a rowdy drinking hole. The kitchen team takes a strong line of social responsibility: air freighting & the like are banned, & food miles & suppliers are published. However, there’s little else that’s exceptional about the menu; expect the normal array of steaks, sea bass, bangers & sharing boards – all competently delivered & reasonably well-prepared. Staff are friendly to children & serve a good Sunday roast. The place can get quite lively at weekends when local families come out to play.
