Square Meal review of The Dispensary: ? Write your review

Housed in a majestic grade II-listed Victorian building, The Dispensary has been given some much-needed sparkle by its new owners. Original high ceilings, huge windows & elegant furnishings can be found in the downstairs bar, while the mezzanine dining area is a cosy space in which to sample the reasonably priced food. Well-executed dishes include ham hock terrine with homemade piccalilli to start, followed by Welsh lamb, garlic mash & Rioja jus for mains, with pear & almond tart rounding things off. The pub menu offers appealing sandwiches & burgers, while the drinks offering includes guest beers from breweries such as Everards & Dark Star.

I am a very regular visitor to The Dispensary as it stands head and shoulders above anywhere else in the area. From the friendly welcome by Annie and the front of house crew to the fantastic food from David and the kitchen team. Try the pub menu downstairs for a really good everyday lunch, always with great fresh ingredients, but for a real treat go onto the mezzanine restaurant level to sample really great food at very reasonable prices given the location. A good place to take a client for lunch if you want a non stuffy, buzzing experience in a really quite quirky old building.
