Square Meal Selections

Square Meal Review of Harry's Bar ?

With its labyrinthine layout, cream & burgundy colour scheme & smartly traditional trappings, the original Harry’s manages to be both jovial & cosy – in contrast to its chic, buzzy sibling on Ironmonger Lane. Wines include a reasonable selection by the glass & a generous helping of sub-£20 bottles, as well as some more upmarket names including a Fiefs de Lagrange ’04 (£65) & a Champagne selection aimed at the flush City crowd. As for food, readers appreciate the kitchen’s use of ‘very good, fresh ingredients’ in dishes such as pan-fried pheasant suprême with chestnut mushrooms, port jus & dauphinoise potatoes. The informal bar menu encompasses sandwiches, platters & a few straightforward mains – think homemade pies or ham, egg & chips.

Had a really excellent lunch here. I'd asked for a quiet table as had a lot to discuss with my guests and was delighted to be guided to an alcove which was prefect. The food was very good- I had goats cheese starter (which whilst not very strong was delicious) and the steak which was really excellent (as was the accompanying peppercorn sauce) and bordering on melt in the mouth standard. Service was very good if a only a notch off excellent. To a degree, this may have been because we were just out of way. Three of us had bread/olive oil, a two course meal, plus sparkling water, non-alcoholic cocktails and coffee for £120 inc service.
    I'll definitely be going again

I have lunched here a few times and have always been very pleased with the result. They offer both a full a la carte restaurant menu and also a shorter bar menu. We always make clear which we need when booking the table. The welcome is always warm and they have some very quiet alcoves if you want that business lunch that might not be overheard at the next table.

The wine list, as you may expect, is very impressive and reasonably priced bearing in mind the City location. It can get expensive, however, if you go for glasses of wine rather than a bottle.

I have developed a real penchant for their scrambled eggs and smoke salmon. The eggs taste wonderful and are clearly freshly prepared. My lunching partner will usually go for the very attractive prawn and avocado salad. Both meals accompanied by a bowl of chips make a perfect business lunch.

Although tucked away in Abchurch Yard it is well worth seeking out and giving them a visit. You will be pleasantly surprised and certainly not regret your decision.
