Square Meal review of The New Rose:
Forget Upper Street – Islington’s premier drag is Essex Road & its coolest watering hole is The New Rose. Casually thrown together to resemble a blue-collar saloon in Anytown, America, it succeeds because, unlike so many self-consciously stylish bars hereabouts, it doesn’t try too hard. It attracts a mixed crowd: Beck’s & Bourbon-shooting metropolitan operators muck in with Staropramen-chasing local lads. A fabulously quirky music policy, with rock ‘n’ roll & dirty soul DJ sets at weekends, covers anything from so-cool-even-Jo-Whiley-doesn’t-get-it, to Petula Clark & Glen Campbell. There’s a dozen wines, London Pride & pizza, burgers & butties from noon until 9pm. And did we mention the Elvis impersonator?
