Ask real Greeks what they make of The Real Greek & they might scoff with disdain, but that’s not to say that this chain is without its merits. What it lacks in Athenian-approved authenticity it makes up for with a lively, fun-loving atmosphere & accessible, no-frills dishes: an excellent way for newcomers to dip a toe in the Aegean. Savour the sunny flavours of a feta, red pepper & onion dip, served with traditional pitta (or health-conscious crudités), or try a warm dish of stuffed vine leaves. Compared to the Olympian range of mezze, main courses are limited to variations on the theme of souvlaki, the Greek version of a kebab. Chicken, lamb, pork & haloumi are skewer-grilled & served in a flatbread alongside tzatziki & a tomato relish. Every dish also comes with a basic calorie count, which rather spoils the fun, but is nonetheless useful for waistline-watchers.
