Square Meal Selections

Square Meal Review of The Gable ?

Cushions in blazing tomato shades add zing to the darkly funky decor at The Gable, but for all its spectral trappings this is a buzzy, relaxed venue with a formal dining area behind the long bar & plenty of daylight streaming through big windows. Now part of the Balls Brothers empire, it offers a full menu at lunchtime: char-grilled chicken breast with Taleggio & pesto, grilled artichoke with minted feta or perhaps one of the daily changing ‘swimmers’ fish specials. Wines are listed by character, with plenty of choice by the glass & a short selection of more prestigious fine vintages; beers on tap include Leffe & Beck’s Vier & cocktails are £7.50 apiece. The wood-panelled Cellar bar below stairs is a snug bolthole with its own identity.

Until yesterday I would of never of thought that the Gable would be any good for lunch. My colleague had been raving about how nice the lunches were. I was very pleasently surprised to say the least, they have a fresh fish specials menu and all at a reasonable price, I paid £9.95 for a Tuna steak nicoise salad, everything was fresh and well prepeared. Need less to say I may have to make the Gable my regular lunch spot.

Happy Hour here buys you a bottle of Prosecco for a half price £12.50. In fact all the drinks are half price. However, disappointment awaits you if you get the munchies while taking advantage of the Happy Hour bargains however, and feel tempted to try a sharer plate here. £18 buys you a platter of synthetic carbs, which is supposed to serve 2-4 people, but really serves 1.5 people, and that's being generous.

THIEVES OPERATE IN THIS PUB.. !!! I went here for a drink after work and had my jacket stolen. It had wallet and phone etc in it. What really annoyed me was I was sat directly under a CCTV camera. I asked the bar manager if they could look over the footage. They said they didn't have time and couldn't help!! Clearly the camera's are there purely for their benefit. I asked if I could have the number of the police station and the manager huffed, walked away talking over her shoulder saying, I'll see what I can do.
Rude. VERY rude. NEVER going back.
