Cushions in blazing tomato shades add zing to the darkly funky decor at The Gable, but for all its spectral trappings this is a buzzy, relaxed venue with a formal dining area behind the long bar & plenty of daylight streaming through big windows. Now part of the Balls Brothers empire, it offers a full menu at lunchtime: char-grilled chicken breast with Taleggio & pesto, grilled artichoke with minted feta or perhaps one of the daily changing ‘swimmers’ fish specials. Wines are listed by character, with plenty of choice by the glass & a short selection of more prestigious fine vintages; beers on tap include Leffe & Beck’s Vier & cocktails are £7.50 apiece. The wood-panelled Cellar bar below stairs is a snug bolthole with its own identity.
