This classy neighbourhood eatery specialising in fish dishes – the owners run a fish shop in Borough Market – is a ‘welcome addition’ to Wanstead. A spacious, airy interior with a wide glass frontage, cream walls & crisp napery set the scene for well-executed modern cooking that lets ingredients sing out. Start perhaps with crab salad with avocado mousse served on toasted carasau bread, followed by red-wine poached halibut with saffron new potatoes, grilled asparagus, rocket salad & shallot dressing, finishing with mixed berry tart with lemon sorbet. It’s not cheap – mains average £15 – but the execution is assured & a three-course set dinner menu at £21.50 offers real value. The global wine list, which kicks off at £12, offers good choice by the glass. Service scores points for being ‘attentive but not overbearing’.
