You don’t need wads of cash & a trendy interior designer to make a good pub. Take The Griffin: this peeling Victorian shambles may look like it was last redecorated back when Jack The Ripper would pop in for a pint, but you can’t buy soul – & this the Griffin has in spades. Veuve Clicquot lurks hopefully on the elaborate music hall-style back bar layered with the patina of time, but John Smith’s is a more likely call. There’s a fair range of wines; doorstep sarnies; cockles & mussels; darts; pool & one of London’s best jukeboxes to choose from between DJ sets. Both the place & the punters are unpretentious & effortlessly stylish.
