Square Meal review of The Mansion: ? Write your review

The bar of this capacious gastropub is often piled with apples & pears from chef Andy Jones’ Cornish garden – a sure sign that this isn’t just another revamped London boozer. The interior might be familiar – red-glass chandeliers, etched mirrors, grand piano, upholstered chairs – but the food is a matter of genuine, palpable pride. The landlord’s own herd of Red Ruby cattle provide the beef for hugely popular Sunday roasts, burgers & more besides; he might also drop in with some trout that could be beetroot-cured in-house. An open kitchen overlooks the dining area, where daily specials add extra interest to a seasonal menu that might take in, say, wild rabbit terrine with pickled walnuts, slow-roasted pork belly with savoy cabbage & butter beans or fish pie. However, this is no restaurant manqué in Gipsy Hill pub clothes – a huge lawned beer garden, quizzes & pie nights prove the point.

I had a business meeting in this pub and arrived an hour early to eat dinner before people began to arrive. When I first sat down in the front of the pub I realised there were several very small fruit flies (maybe 10) all fighting to get to my drink before I could so I decided to move to the room the meeting would be in to eat and hopefully avoid the flies. By the time my food arrived I had realised that the whole pub has a terrible fly infestation and after I reported this to several members of staff I realised that this is something they are aware of but have done nothing about. I ate my meal by using only a fork because I had to keep a menu in the other hand to bat away the numerous flies attacking me.

Needless to say I didn't eat it all as it was completely offputting and when asked by the waitress if I'd enjoyed my meal at the end I explained all of this and got a blank expression and she walked away.

The food is, in my opinion, below average (the chips were thin, chewy and dry) and as I'd paid over £10 for fish and chips I began my meeting very stressed and left sharply after it had ended as I couldn't bear the flies anymore.

On the flip side, there was one very pleasant member of staff (australian I think) who was a new female employee behind the bar and seemed to empathise with the fly problem.
