Square Meal review of Benja: ? Write your own review

Benja’s townhouse home offers three intimate floors of exotic Thai design & enterprising, modern-accented cooking. It’s a restaurant of some ambition, flying celebrity consultant chefs over from Thailand to give the menu a revamp (with mixed results) & introducing deals such as the house-filling £9.95 lunch. The cuisine is royal Thai with a twist or two, resulting in such dishes as lamb with Thai herbs & a dash of whisky, or king scallops in black pepper sauce. Som tam, pad thai with king prawns, & green curry are fail-safe renditions. Benja is well liked, although there are mutterings that the food – in execution rather than ingredients – is not to the standard the prices suggest. The decor & atmosphere are deemed ‘lovely’, particularly the basement bar (‘all blacks & reds with low lighting’). Also popular is the line-up of fun cocktails. Staff are as winsome as ever.

I went to Benja last night with my husband and I'd agree with the Squaremeal review…the menu is different but the food wasn't to standard that the prices on the menu suggest. I left feeling ripped off!! It cost nearly £90 for a meal for 2 with drinks which I don't mind paying if the food is worth it.

I had duck in whiskey sauce which wasn't that nice pinky colour that you get when it's cooked just right. My husband's lamb steak in red curry paste was slightly overcooked too & he said it too sickly as well. Not bad enough to complain about but definitely not up to the £15 price tag.

The service was good but not amazingly so. We sat downstair in what seemed like the bar rather than the restaurant & the decor & atomsphere were lovely…all blacks & reds with low lighting.

In short, I've had better Thai food for less money & a higher standard of food for the price we paid! I wouldn't return.
