Despite the name, there’s nothing peripheral about this restaurant housed inside a grand mansion house turned hotel. The thick drapes, heavy upholstery & polished wooden tables of the dining room are fitting decoration for a building with a long, rich history stretching back to the mid-16th century. Equally polished staff keep everything running smoothly. The menu is a mainly French affair, featuring baked Camembert with garlic croutons or chicken liver & foie gras parfait, followed by slow-cooked shoulder of lamb with peppercorn sauce & dauphinois potatoes or steamed fillet of salmon with sauce vierge. Interestingly, the odd foreign interloper also creeps in – asparagus lasagne, say, or smoked haddock chowder.
