The guys at Young’s Brewery have done well to inject some character into this Imperial Wharf site, which now combines a swish bar with a smart mezzanine dining area. Floor-to-ceiling curtains & different levels break up the high-ceilinged space, & the waterfront terrace – with its own bar in summer – is a sought-after spot in hot weather. The menu mixes standards such as braised lamb shank or sausage & mash with a few brighter ideas including potted venison with pickled gherkins, although desserts stay firmly on safe ground with the likes of sticky toffee pudding or apricot crumble. The wine list offers a touch more excitement, with much of the global list available by the glass; meanwhile, the downstairs section of the pub also doubles as a deli/café during the day.
