Ronnie Scott’s has the All That Jazz vibe spot on: the gin’s cold, the piano’s hot. In contrast, the club’s restaurant operation is, alas, only tepid. The vintage Frith Street legend looks as cool as ever: a drop-dead gorgeous room worth experiencing at least once. ‘You really do expect to see the Krays sitting in a corner smoking cigars.’ In the near darkness, with conversation verboten (or limited to whispered requests for drinks) & the lights down during the performance, the flaws in the food are only emphasised. There’s ‘something for all tastes’, but regulars stick to simple stuff such as the house signature fishcake (not cheap at £15) or chicken club (ditto at £12) with hot crispy fries. Service slackens considerably when the musicians take the stage. Take a cue from the performers & just drink – a martini sandwich (beer, martini, beer) will prove you’re hepcat cool.
