To signal its new identity within the Soho House group, this relaxed Shoreditch venue has trimmed its name from Grille to Grill. The partitions that rigidly separated the hotel reception from the restaurant have also been pared back, to create a more open yet subtly warmer space, & the interior terrace has been prettified with pergolas. The new menu strikes a similar crowd-pleasing chord to its predecessor, though it is peppered with American classics, from clam chowder to lemon meringue pie, by way of Caesar salad. A broad bean & mint soup (offered hot or cold) was wholesome but rather too cloying for a chilled summery starter. In contrast, a thick, char-grilled New York strip hit the spot, served with creamed spinach (seasoned with nutmeg) & a bucket of crisp hand-cut chips. Desserts come in hearty, diner-sized portions, & the USA is the prime player on the fairly priced wine list.
