Does anywhere in London replenish its guests’ complimentary salted nibbles quite as assiduously? Largesse, or a cunning ploy designed to make you drink more? Not that we’re complaining: anything less than three cocktails at The Dorchester’s patrician bar would be a wasted journey – although £17 (plus service) for a Tanqueray 10 martini lays down a serious marker. Old-school quaffs feel just right in the context of a slinky, bronze mirrored lounge – even if its art-deco fabulousness is scarred by ghastly, gimmicky ‘modern’ red-glass shards atop high-backed banquettes. Otherwise, it’s all positive: don’t miss the bergamot & lavender daiquiri, or ‘silk & Champagne’ – a decadent, grown-up knickerbocker glory, comprising Grand Marnier, maraschino, brandy, pineapple juice & ice cream charged with fizz. Egg-white omelette & chips, or sevruga caviar & Coke? ‘Naturally, sir.’ This is The Dorchester, after all.
