Square Meal review of SO Restaurant:
Despite being open for just over a year, SO Restaurant has had a refurb. It didn’t need it, & it still looks rather classy with its textured wallpaper, silk blinds & sultry lighting. The food plays around with traditional Japanese ideas, adding some European tweaks. You can, of course, go the traditional route with top-notch sushi (try the melt-in-the-mouth tuna tataki with a zesty lime ponzu dressing), tender teriyaki salmon or black cod marinated in miso. But elsewhere are more interesting dishes of Barbary duck smoked on Jack Daniels wood chips served with marinated mushrooms, Asian-style pan-fried foie gras on a bed of rice or fillet steak with roasted seasonal veg & goma (soy, mirin & sake) sauce. Various set-lunch menus offer good value & this is a great place to try saké – the list is long & has lots of tips for novices.
