Square Meal review of Black Friar:
Praise be to former poet laureate Sir John Betjeman who saved this Victorian corner pub from the bulldozers back in the 1960s. The marvellous chapel-like Arts & Crafts interior is inspired by a 13th-century Dominican priory that was once located nearby: it features cream, ruby & emerald Florentine marble, gold mosaic & vaulted ceilings inscribed with monastic caveats about the perils of overindulgence. ‘Finery Is Foolery’ warns one. We say Finery is our Heritage & rightly proud we are of it, as we order steak & ale pie & a pint of London Pride, Timothy Taylor Landlord or one of the regularly changed guest beers.
