Square Meal review of The Marquess Tavern:

The team that gave birth to Green & Red as well as Hawksmoor has scored another bull’s-eye with the relaunch of this gastropub. Tucked away in the Islington backwaters, The Marquess was once a grotty old boozer, but it has been lovingly restored. There’s an attractive & unshowy bar filled with chesterfields &, to the rear, a simply furnished, white-painted dining room that has a pleasingly austere grandeur. The menu is resolutely British: kick off with sardines & tomatoes on toast, or similarly retro potted salmon & pickled cucumber. Mains include hefty chicken & mushroom pie & a comforting Lancashire hotpot, with an equally charming & simple raspberry fool for dessert. It’s great to see such an extensive range of British bottles on the long wine & beer list, & similar care has been put into sourcing the impressive range of malt whiskies.
