Square Meal review of Konstam at The Prince Albert:

Although it’s located on a gritty King’s Cross corner site, Konstam aims to reconnect London with the surrounding countryside by sourcing as much produce as possible from within the M25. Ingredients such as chicken from Waltham Abbey & pigeon from Amersham are of top quality, & provide the chefs in its open kitchen with plenty of inspiration. The food eschews subtlety, offering earthy & often intensely satisfying flavours: grilled Amersham pork chop is partnered with cabbage, bacon dumplings & creme fraiche, seared ox tongue is pepped up with grilled baby leeks & horseradish, & clove ice-cream accompanies a hot marmalade pudding. The decor is as bold as the food, with swooping chain-mail drapes & deep turquoise walls. Availability of wines (look out for some very good English bins) can be erratic, but there’s always London Porter to fortify. ‘A real asset for the neighbourhood,’ reckons one of its fans; we suspect he speaks for many.
Chef: Oliver Rowe
Talented young chef Oliver Rowe has set himself the challenge of running a restaurant in the heart of London sourcing most ingredients within access of the Tube. Rowe who already owns & runs the locally loved Konstam Cafe says his driving force is taste. ‘We are always being told to eat local food & I wanted to see if this was realistic in London.’ His mushrooms are grown in polytunnels, the fish comes from the Thames & potatoes come from Rowe’s own allotment. Dishes include Chesham goats’ cheese & nettle perogi with breadcrumbs & Amersham loin chop with spetzle & chervil dressing. Rowe began cooking at the age of 14 in Tuscany & at 22 did a another six months in Italy before training further in Greece.
