It may not be edgy or fashionable, but there’s plenty to like about this great white stucco country-house hotel, plonked in the middle of Wimbledon Common. The restaurant’s mix of formal tables, surprisingly snappy service and modish food (lobster and scallop lasagne with sauce nantaise, for example) has its fans, and bookings are snapped up for ‘calendar occasions’. More relaxed and arguably more fun, however, is the Orangerie in the huge new glass extension overlooking the Common, where breakfast and afternoon tea give way to quality tapas and light meals. There’s a leg of Bellota ham on the bar, cheeses from Spain and Italy, and the menu promises the likes of slow-cooked beef shin with lentils or cuttlefish a la plancha washed down with carefully chosen wines. The ladies of Wimbledon love it – and not a Womble in sight.
