Square Meal review of Saki:
Food emporiums are difficult to pull off with panache, but Saki seems to have exactly the right dna to achieve its goal. Spread over two floors, it encompasses a basement restaurant (all reds, blacks & dark wood tabletops), funky bar (which doubles as a tea spot during the day) & food store at street level. Although most of the cooking is classical and entirely correct Japanese, a contemporary edge surfaces in fusion desserts like hoji brown tea ice-cream & green tea tiramisu. Sushi is fresh, zingy, exemplary – try the melt-in-the-mouth king of fatty tunas otoro or the soft shell crab – & contemporary classics like miso-marinated black cod are executed to a very high standard, alongside assortments of teriyaki & tempura. Veggies & vegans are also surprisingly well catered to, as are curious foodies with a devilish interest in pairing the food with sake, wine or a delicious array of unusual cocktails. Contemporary design and friendly staff complete the edifying picture. This remains something of a hidden gem, but not, we suspect, for much longer.
