Yum Yum Thai Restaurant

This place is confusing. Nice decor, big space for Stoke Newington but…
Food is much better in local take-away shop.
Very small portions for the price they are asking (They should realise that they dont base in Mayfair.)
Rude waiters who does not want to listen to you nor serve you.
Fancy looking but tasteless coctails.
Overall: I am not going back.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. I love the ambiance, the food is fantastic and the service is always good. I'd highly recommend the lamb mussaman curry and also the kai lad prik. Brilliant place to eat.

We used the enticing 50% off all food offer and left vowing never to return to Yum Yums. Despite the food being good, the staff knew we were using the half price food deal and the portions were much smaller than those on the table next to us not on the deal (2 spring rolls instead of 3, 3 satay chicken sticks instead of 4 etc). When we brought this to their attention they were most embarrassed but not surprised – this seems to be par for the course. It was a case of paying 50% of the normal price, but for 50% of the food. In short a scam.

It's a shame there are such poor reviews below, but I think this restaurant is definately worth a try if you enjoy Thai Cuisine. I found the food simply delicious – and not one plate in our group of 4 was left with food still on it. Yum Yum make an excellent Chicken Pad Thai and I noticed other tables ordering the entree platter which looked amazing. I thought the service was fine, there were no issues at all, but the restaurant is quite big and it was very busy when we were there so i can see how things might slip in the below comments. The atmosphere and style of the restaurant is very authentic and enjoyed being seated in the Oriental Section where the very low tables are situated. The only thing that wasn't great about Yum Yum is it's location. It's not the easiest place to get to and get home from unless you live in that area. But if you enjoy a lovely, fresh and healthy thai meal then it's definately worth the mission.

I recently went to this restaurant for lunch with my friend and was very disappointed.

On arrival, the restaurant was cold and we had to keep our coats on until it warmed up. Certain areas of the restaurant were off-bounds at lunchtimes, so we were not allowed to sit at the table of our choice. Unfortunately, the main waiter was patronising and rude – he definitely needs to go to charm school. There are ways of politely refusing a request, without causing offense, but I am afraid this was beyond his capabilities. By contrast, the assistant waiter was much more polite and helpful.

The first courses had to be sent back to be warmed up because the soup was stone cold. The main course would have been OK if it had been as described on the menu. There was a distinct lack of some of the ingredients, just 1 tiny piece of a baby aubergine for example. The coconut ice cream that accompanied the banana fritters was very nice but the portion size tiny.

I think this is a case of a restaurant that has been given the thumbs up from Gordon Ramsay getting above itself and somehow forgetting that it's the average punter that pays the wages. A restaurant of this size needs regular customers. I won't be going there again.

Set in a beautiful old house in the unlikely setting of Stoke Newington High Street, this restaurant instantly transports you from the grit of North London to a glamourous and calm world of Thai huts, water fountains and a long sleek bar. The cocktail menu was long and inventive, not cheap, but not West End prices (despite the West End decor). The food and service however, were both let downs. The starters of ‘golden balls’ (yes, really) consisted of chopped, seasoned chicken fried in a light batter with a sweet chilli dipping sauce and prawn spring rolls were good – light and crispy, but the mains were another story. There “award winning” Mussaman lamb curry “cooked for hours and served on the bone with pumpkin and potatoes” was a larg bowl of sweet sauce with one small wedge of pumpkin, two small pieces of potato and three tiny pieces of ‘lamb’ that were not on the bone and looked like they'd been chewed up and then regurgitated by the local moggy…but were still tough as old boot leather. The lightly fried chicken with a chilli coconut sauce had a good quality, tasty chicken breast but was ruined by the presence of the chilli coconut sauce which both looked and tasted exactly the same as the gloop that the lamb curry was swimming in. Overall, the menu was full of typical ‘British Thai’ food – the usual green and red curries and pad thai and the like, nothing new or different. The wine list was good and the wine arrived speedily, but I'm still waiting for the tap water that we had to ask for three times. This isn't a cheap local restaurant, but I fear that you're paying more for the decor than the food. Not a terrible restaurant, but I won't be going back in a hurry.
