Oliver Peyton’s restaurant at The National Gallery celebrates the best of British, winning praise for the ‘fresh & interesting’ seasonal ingredients sourced from small producers & the ‘cool & understated’ decor. Bag a table overlooking Trafalgar Square & tuck into classy cooking such as meltingly tender Suffolk lamb with samphire (an odd pairing but one that works), or perfectly pink sea trout with buttery champ. Elsewhere on the menu are starters of lightly fried courgette flowers or Dorset crab surrounded by a thick, rich chilled tomato soup, puds including a slab of lemony treacle tart with clotted cream, a selection of British & Irish cheeses & ace afternoon teas. The wine list is not so patriotic, with just one English bottle (a rose), while service is much improved from last year.
