Square Meal review of The Cuckoo Club:
This nifty new venture has everything you need for a glamorous night out. There’s a members’ club in the basement, though it’s the ground-floor restaurant & bar, open to all (as long as you make a reservation), that’s the more interesting place. Mirrors, black tables & purple armchairs are lit by a ceiling studded with violet lights, while live music from a small stage proves surprisingly unobtrusive. The food from the modern European menu is prepared to a reasonably reliable standard. Succulent carpaccio of black Welsh beef with black truffle & parmesan shards cannot be faulted, while salmon smoked in-house delivers big flavour & a fine sting of spiky horseradish creme fraiche. Yet a simple wild mushroom risotto is entirely lacking in flavour, puddings are ordinary & some of the house cocktails woefully misjudged. The best bet: skip dessert & stick to classic cocktails & you’ll have a fine old time.
