Square Meal Review of Fig Bistro ?

Having taken his innovative Nordic cuisine to North Road restaurant in Smithfield, Danish chef Christoffer Hruskova has recast this tiny room on a leafy Barnsbury backstreet as an unpretentious local bistro. Hruskova’s enthusiasm for fresh, seasonal produce is still much in evidence, & the two young chefs in the small open kitchen utilise ingredients at the peak of their flavour. Asparagus might be accompanied by sweet brown shrimps & a subtle tarragon butter, while spring lamb sits on a vibrant green purée dotted with more fresh peas. The wine list is concise yet appealing; like the food, it’s not cheap, but this doesn’t seem to bother the well-off locals. Plenty stop by for a relaxed supper or a refined brunch of Danish rye with scrambled eggs & smoked salmon, paired with a Prosecco & peach Bellini.

    What a shambles!

Proceed with extreme caution to the brunch menu…
Perhaps the evening meals are a revelation, but I for one will not be back.

Sunday brunch yesterday consisted entirely of ingredients that you could buy in costcutter, and was presented as such.

I have never before put baked beans and coriander in a flour tortilla and called it brunch. Fig Bistro have, and charge you close to a tenner for the privilege.

We waited over 30 minutes for our drinks despite being one of 2 tables in the bistro. My bloody mary arrived in a jug after half an hour, except the waiter had not yet added the vodka, and proceeded to tip vodka into my glass at the table.

I'm not usually prone to bad mouthing places, and everywhere can have an off day.
I felt that fig bistro was a class apart in terms of it's pretention and failure to deliver.

A small and intimate restaurant in an unusual location. Interesting and creative menu, although selection is limited (about 5 options per course). Portion sizes are moderate. Pluses are the standard of cooking (excellent) and atmosphere. A bit pricey for what it is. Quality of the service has ranged from competent to very good on the 4 occasions I've visited. Recommended.

WOW! Fig was truely an exceptionally lucky dip. I decided to go out for dinner on a whim in islington very late this evening and discovered fig here on squaremeal. Not far from (my) home, amazing mouth watering food with a fine selection of wine and unintrusive, friendly and knowledgeable staff, all at a very reasonable price. Without doubt this lovely little restaurant is going straight to the top of my favourite restaurants and i cant wait to return.

Went to Fig this Friday just gone after recommendations from friends. I my friends were spot on…this place is amazing.
We went for the 5 course tasting menu with matching wines and I can only say that everything was a dream. Food was well prepared, great combinations and the wine that went with each dish was superb.
Staff was attentive (but not over the top) and knowledgeable. All in all a superb night at this little charming restaurant
    Well done and thank you.

I have just booked a table at Fig and this reminded me to review the previous visit I paid a couple of weeks ago. It was my partner’s birthday so I wanted a special night. A friend of mine recommended me this lovely little restaurant and the settings were indeed perfect for this occasion. Now food! We have been so fortunate to eat at a lot of fine restaurants but at Fig we were both blown away by the quirky combinations of flavours. The selection of wines for such a small establishment was quite impressive. Friendly and smiling staff guided us through the jungle of both wine and food and we ended up with a perfect match. We had an organic red wine, Banniers, which was fantastic with the lamb and the wood pigeon. Between the dishes there were funky art work on the walls and John Coltrane. The waitress recommended champagne with the cheese. This was new to us as we usually go with port but new standards were set. I am looking forward to next week.

We went to Fig for a special celebration meal, and left feeling totally ripped off. Where shall I begin? Our glasses of wine and champagne were only half filled. The service was appalling. My husband had a passable main course, however my pigeon was burnt and only eaten because I was starving hungry. When we complained, the surly waitress contradicted us and was rather slow to offer any appeasement. In fact, she didn't. The bread was hard, bitter and toasted. The cheese took 15 minutes to arrive. The final bill? £88. For three glasses of wine, two main courses and a plate of cheese. We will never go back. Obviously.

Fig truly is a hidden gem tucked away in the leafy streets of Barnsbury. Once a grocer's shop, it is a cosy little place usually full of couples and small groups of friends. Don't be put off by the menu – my husband rarely finds a dish without at least one inrgedient which he isn't too keen on (and he's not THAT fussy) but always really enjoys whatever he's ordered. It can be quite eye opening and the food has always been outstanding – there are few places in London where you can eat like this at such reasonable prices.

It is very rare you find a gem like Fig, but we where so lucky to be invited to the restaurant on a Friday night! The restaurant was very busy, but either the food or service suffered under it.
Superb and interesting food, brilliant wine list and a very cozy atmosphere We will be back soon. Well done Fig and top marks to you.
