‘The best neighbourhood restaurant I know of,’ says one of many readers who cherish Fig. For somewhere so tiny, its fans are legion & the cooking has huge ambition. Dishes such as pressed salted ham hock with warm Hereford snail salad, cauliflower & dittander (a peppery herb), rabbit sausage & squid, baked tomato, Kalamata olive & fennel, & pollock baked with samphire, morels, kohlrabi & anise sauce certainly push Barnsbury’s usual gastronomic boundaries & pay careful attention to the season (the menu changes monthly). Desserts are just as inventive, such as pumpkin three ways – presented as sorbet, nougat & syrup. The wine list is more than a match for the cooking, the ambience is ‘charming & relaxed’, & the service ‘enthusiastic’.
