Square Meal review of French House Bar:
There’s a hint of ’Allo ’Allo’s Cafe René about this most Gallic of Soho watering holes – the smoke from a million Gauloises coats sepia-tinted walls plastered in fading photographs of long-forgotten faces from Paris Match. The French House is so named because, during the war, it played HQ to servicemen (including Charles De Gaulle) who had escaped Nazi-occupied France. Such a heritage means that beers (Duvel, Leffe & draught Kronenbourg sold only by the half pint) play second fiddle to wine, cider, eau de vie & pastis: more Ricard is reportedly sold here than in any bar outside France. More pan-European food is served in an upstairs room where General de Gaulle is popularly held to have written rousing speeches for broadcast to his compatriots.
