Once at the very hub of Fleet Street, the Press House used to cater to gin-hardened hacks. But now that journalists are yesterday’s news in this part of town, more salubrious business folk will appreciate a smart comfortable location whose mission statement is ‘Excellent Food. Superb Wine. Exemplary Service’. No quibbles on that front: there’s a lunchtime range of comfort staples (fish pie, chicken curry) & daily specials, upmarket sandwiches (hot salt beef with pickled onions & gherkins) & quiches, as well as evening appetisers. Twenty quid secures an admirable Macon Lugny or a Juniper Crossing Cabernet-Merlot from Western Australia, although the ‘Prestige Selection’s 2003 Puligny Montrachet premier cru at £92 may appeal to latter-day journos with a scoop to celebrate.
