Green Papaya is a fondly regarded gem in the heart of east London’s Vietnamese restaurant scene, yet a million miles from Shoreditch’s fast & furious budget canteens. Solicitous service & a pleasant bistro-style interior encourage diners to linger – a rare thing, given the modest prices. From an appetising menu of classics bolstered by weekly specials, tilapia in banana leaf, stir-fried beef with la lot, & any of the smoked tofu dishes (stir-fried with asparagus, for instance), demonstrate a commitment to good fresh ingredients & authentic flavours. The vegetarian choice is especially notable (wing bean salad, say, or kohl rabi with shiitake mushrooms). A brief wine list provides just about enough interest, though an ice-cold Vietnamese beer or deliciously sweet iced coffee go down just as well. Hackney Empire is only a short walk away, making Green Papaya one of the better options for a pre- or post-theatre meal.
