Sitting pretty amid prime W9 property, this quirky pub is a tale of two halves. The Prince Alfred boozer is a twee spot with several partitioned rooms positioned around a horseshoe bar, linked by Alice in Wonderland doorways & inhabited by a mixed crowd. Here, Young’s ales are consumed, along with bottles of Crabbie’s alcoholic ginger beer & wines in the £20-40 bracket. It’s all very cute & quaint, particularly when contrasted with the attached Formosa Dining Rooms, where lofty ceilings & clean-lined furnishings feel much more contemporary. The menu consists of unfussy & well-executed pub-style food. Long-standing favourite, twice-cooked pork belly with braised red cabbage & apple sauce, could be preceded by a pear, blue cheese & walnut salad, & followed by warm chocolate & walnut brownie. While bills won’t make you balk, service can falter at busy times.
