In 1955, Ruth Ellis shot her lover outside The Magdala & became the last woman to be hanged in Britain. You can still run your fingers over the bullet holes in the wall, but if grisly history doesn’t appeal, there are plenty more reasons to visit this family-friendly pub. For a start, it’s well-positioned near Hampstead Heath. Then there are the regular open-mic & quiz nights, & the two attractive bars (one cosy & wood-panelled, the other larger & airy). Greene King IPA & London Pride are the preferred ales, & the wine list runs to Chablis & Rioja for £30. Honest pub grub fills the menu: the likes of Cumberland sausages & mash, cod in beer batter, & steak & chips, with ice creams from Marine Ices for afters.
