Square Meal review of The Magdala: ? Write your review

Hampstead gets its fair share of entries in the history books, what with all the poets & playwrights who have graced its quaint cobbled streets. The Magdala adds its own gruesome footnote courtesy of Ruth Ellis, who shot her lover outside the pub in 1955 & became the last women to be hanged in Britain. Bullet holes in the wall & a framed newspaper are the only allusions to the incident in this homely boozer nowadays, where ramblers from Hampstead Heath stop in for a pint & the honest British food finds favour with the locals. Pork pies with homemade piccalilli, lamb chops, & crispy pork belly with bubble & squeak are typical dishes on the hearty menu, with guest ales & a handful of wines making up the drinks list.

I had the misfortune of visiting the Magdala on Sunday. I ordered the 'tempura prawns with chilli julienne vegetables'. Not only were the julienne vegetables missing when it arrived, the prawns had also been battered and fried whole rendering the whole tempura batter completely pointless.

When I complained the staff admitted that the prawns should not have been cooked that way but when challenged about the vegetables the manager proceeded to tell me smugly that the grated salad that I received was in fact the julienne vegetables. Hmm, not like any I've had before!

If you like places that don't serve what you ordered, have incompetent chefs and patronising smug managers then this is the place for you!
