Square Meal Review of 5th View Champagne & Seafood Bar ?

The space devoted to food & beverages at Waterstone’s flagship premises has expanded over the years. Now, the entire top floor is one big all-day grazing opportunity. The actual ‘view’ may be nothing to write home about, but the bar’s cocktails are: try Champagne gaiety girl, Moulin Rouge or Dusty Springfield – a ‘sultry, fruity, sour & tortured’ tribute to Britain’s late, great soul singer made with her beloved vodka. The food served at a grand zinc bar reprises Anglo-Med classics & seafood, backed by a decent range of wines & beers including Black Sheep Ale & Estrella Damm. Given the downloading excesses of ‘generation Kindle’, can we ultimately expect the whole building to end up as a food court, with only Richard & Judy’s recommendations on the lone remaining bookshelf?

Catastrophe! A year ago one could get a decent meal here – God knows what they think they have done to it. At lunch time on Sept 4, two thirds of the space was completely abandoned. The ‘Sunday Lunch Menu’ was brief, dated for July and August and mainly snacks, cold plates to share etc. It was a bit like a greasy spoon cocktail bar in Rhyl out of season and, deservedly, empty but not cheap. Friendly service but a terrible waste of an opportunity – avoid.

The nice view and relaxed atmosphere are worth it, but I was disappointed to see they have changed the menu. It is now more of a typical British cafe menu (sausage and mash, fish & chips, etc) and no longer a “Champagne & Seafood Bar”. So the name of the restaurant should reflect this change. It's still a nice place to meet a friend for lunch, but it is misleading to think there will be oysters or lobster or the special seafood dishes that used to be on the menu.
