Square Meal Review of Taqueria ?

The dark wood floors & padded red-leather seats may have more in common with an American diner than the fast-food joints of Mexico & southern California but the tostados, tacos & quesadillas at Taqueria are the real McCoy. Corn tortillas are made on the premises & stuffed with the likes of shredded, slow-cooked pork or strips of char-grilled skirt steak. The kitchen’s sourcing credentials are admirable: eggs, chicken & pork are free-range; fish comes from sustainable sources; & milk is organic. True to form, the drinks list features a line-up of imported beers as well as a huge selection of Tequilas – drunk neat or in ‘amazing margaritas’. Otherwise, the wonderfully cooling horchata (a rice drink with a hint of almond & cinnamon) is a perfect, soothing foil to the mouth-tingling fare.

for 6 quid at lunchtime (12-4pm weekdays)
you can have a bowl of warming broth (caldo tlapeno) with chicken, rice, avocado and chickpeas. Its filling and delicious and comes with two quesadillas on the side – perfect for re-fuelling

I agree with the other reviewers – this is not greasy tex mex – this place serves authentic tasting mexican tacos

Tapas-style dishes are perfect as there are so many options on the menu that it's difficult to pick just one dish! Taqueria is a cute neighbourhood restaurant that's casual and fun.

Attentive service; cheerful explaination of items on menu which are lesser known outside of Mexico; cosy atmosphere; and inexpensive for a light meal that is very different. Great place to meet friends at.

Last night four of us went to Taqueria in Notting Hill. Taqueria is a Mexican restaurant on Westbourne Grove. I haven't eaten Mexican food in a long, long time so I was really excited about trying something and somewhere new.

You can't book a table at Taqueria so you're either lucky enough to bag one or you need to wait at the bar until one becomes available. We arrived at 7.30pm and managed to get one of the last tables. The place was already buzzing and rocking.

The interior is simple but stylish. They have definitely made the most of the space.

The staff are great too. Friendly and polite without being in your face or overbearing.

The menu is simple enough, a choice of Antojitos, Tostadas, Sopas and Tacos. They also have a lot of extras too.

We kicked off the meal by ordering beers and margaritas. The margarita was delicious. A great kick, especially with the salt.

We decided to get a selection of different dishes and so ordered the following to start:

Quesadillas with chicken. Botana (to share) which is refried beans with crumbled cheese, guacamole, salsa, pickled jalapenos and totopos and a Caldo tlalpeno which is a soup of chicken broth, chicken, chickpeas, rice, avocado, chile chipotle, diced onion, corriander and lime.

The three dishes kind of arrived at the same time, there was a slight delay between the Botana and the Quesadilla and Caldo tlalpeno. The Botana was good and we all liked the refried beans. They don't look that appetising but were absolutely moreish. The Quesadilla was delicious, small but delicious. The soup looked and tasted the best we think.

For our main course we all became a little predictable and ordered the Taco Carne Asada which is char grilled skirt steak, avocado mash and salsa Mexicana. We ordered a side of the black beans, so the Frijoles refritos. The Tacos came and looked good. They tasted just amazing. The skirt steak delicious against the fresh avocado and salsa. They salsa was gentle and didn't overpower the dish.

For pudding we ordered a Pudin de vainilla which is a vanilla pudding with hibiscus syrup and of course Churros Con Cajeta, home made churros with cajeta.

Both puddings were unbelievably good. The plates were licked cleaned and we could have easily ordered the same again. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up.

Dinner came in at £130 including service. However there were four of us and I alone drank three margaritas which are £7 a pop.

I guess my main criticism is that Taqueria is almost a Mexican tapas restaurant. The food is delicious but the portions are small. It's great if you want to order a number of dishes and pick but if you're looking for a traditional three courses then this isn't for you.

I would definitely go back. The food was very good, the service delightful and it's in a good spot. Plus the margaritas are amazing.

Taqueria is a deceivingly good little eaterie, the kind you'd disregard and walk past because the shop front wasn't glamourous enough or the chairs were too plastic for your liking. Look past that and you've got yourself a seriously good and fast outlet to load up on some much needed carbs before a night out.

Now lets get one little detail out of the way – Taqueria is not attempting a large scale mass appeal such as the likes of Wahaca and others jumping on the Mexican bandwagon. What is does do rather impressively, is squeeze in firm favourites and some street food classics you may be less familiar with, on to a simple yet flavour packed menu. If you understand this, then you'll love the food and the somewhat bland and tired interiors won't even be a problem. Plain and simple.

One other thing that Taqueria does rather well and something certain restaurants of a grander appeal should learn from is; outrageously genuine and friendly service. Our waitress even greeted a latecoming guest of ours as if she were a friend she hadn't seen in ages. A true pleasure.

Excellent Mexican food for a quick meal, especially on weekend lunchtimes. Food is being prepared very quickly, while you enjoy nice chilled bottle of Negra Modela dark beer. The food is very tasty and authentic, menu is pretty extensive, but definitely not expensive. Top class for a casual, tasty and unpretentious meal!

I recently moved from Los Angeles to London and was happy to find a Mexican restaurant here, but was disappointed by Taqueria.

The service is slow, and perhaps as a result the food is cold by the time it reaches the table. Having tried the carne asada, the pastor and the carnitas meats, I found all of them a bit fatty and tough. The only highlight, food wise, is that the tequila selection is OK.

I will not be eating there again.

La Taqueria offers a refreshing and decent array of mexican 'street' fare and a great place to stop for lunch. The tacos have a range of decent fillings (meat, fish, shellfish and vegetarian) and there are a few more substantial dishes such as enchiladas, huevos rancheros etc. to choose from. The refried beans and fried plantain were particularly memorable and everything looked and tasted fresh and felt relatively healthy! A more interesting and perhaps more authentic alternative to the other more 'tex mex' openings in London.
