Although it looks rather forbidding from the street, persevere through the door of Thai on the River, where the panoramic view of the Thames lights up the entire restaurant through a huge glass riverside conservatory. It’s a wonderfully romantic setting, which diners should make the most of – as, sadly, the restaurant & the kitchen itself are no great shakes. Readers complain about ‘mean portions’ of chicken satay, ‘surly’ service & a worrying lack of customers. The local delivery & takeaway service, especially at lunchtime, is a boon to the local offices, however, & this branch of a mini-chain (with branches in Norwich & Aylesbury) provides most of the Thai standards (tom yum soup, chicken massaman curry, pad thai, plus the more adventurous likes of steamed sea bass) at reasonable prices.
